Basileus Julian Purnell Purvis

I greet you in the precious name of Jesus the Christ. I am Julian Purnell Purvis and the FY2019 Basileus of the Omicron Kappa Kappa (OKK) Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated. The OKK Chapter has a very rich history of supporting the Reston/Herndon community that reaches back to our origin on December 14, 1996. Since our inception, we have directly impacted the Reston/Herndon community via our mandated programs such as, our Scholarship and Talent Hunt competitions for the youth, the Charles Drew Blood Drive and Relay-for-Life events, just to name a few among many other educational and social programs.

Being a member of Omega Psi Phi is an affiliation that I do not take lightly. My first exposure to the Brothers of Omega Psi Phi was from 1989 to 1994 on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University where I witnessed first-hand this elite organization. I knew that one day I would be an Omega Man. My time arrived on May 6, 2006 and since that day it has been Omega Psi Phi until the day I die. I am blessed to have a wife of 20 plus years by the name of Shawn Chambliss-Purvis and three amazing sons, Javon (22), Jamari (18) and Justin (14). I put a premium on being there for my family and by the same notion I accepted this leadership role to continue to propel the OKK Chapter to even higher heights.

I plan to be intentional about reaching poverty-stricken communities that need a helping hand instead of a hand-out. I truly believe that we as men of Omega Psi Phi need to be intentional about building a bridge for the next generation who are approaching the chasm that we have crossed. My parents were very intentional in ensuring that I was a first-generation graduate in Electrical Engineering from NC A&T State University. As a result of that education, I have a 23 plus year career in Aerospace/Defense. It is incumbent upon me, as well as the Brothers of the OKK Chapter, to blaze a path for the youth who are waiting in the wings to experience their full potential.

Clearly you see that I am leaning heavily on the word “intentional”. The rationale for this is that the time for uncalculated decision making has passed us by. The community needs the men of Omega Psi Phi, as well as other members of the Divine Nine, to become intentional and calculated about our decisions and social activities. The harvest of young men and women seeking direction is great and the labors are few, therefore, I plan to lead the OKK Chapter down an intentional path in which we impact the lives of those young men and women who welcome our presence.

I am ready to get to work. Will you join me? Long live Omicron Kappa Kappa and long live Omega Psi Phi!!!

Yours in Omega
